what is the Thurmond Statesman Institute?
The Thurmond Statesman Institute is a four year high school magnet program at Strom Thurmond High School designed to challenge young leaders by inspiring them to serve as examples in the community and school. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, keep a clear discipline record, show active leadership skills, and participate in a number of activities throughout the school. Part of the program requirements are to complete a senior project of our choice that would benefit the entire community. When I joined TSI, I had no idea that I would embark on such a wonderful project, but I feel very blessed that I chose a project that allowed me to spend time with so many heroes. After graduation, TSI students are supposed to take the leadership skills learned at Strom Thurmond High School and continue their leadership practices by serving others. Although I do not see the military in my personal future, I hope to continue to honor these men and women through service and remembrance. A leader is one that sees a need a fulfills it. I am honored to share the stories of such courageous individuals and to have served in community service. It is a blessing to have the knowledge that my contributions are going to thank our American heroes and promote a good cause.
