The American Legion Auxiliary
I was blessed to be able to volunteer with the American Legion, an organization of daughters, wives, nieces, and close family members of veterans of war. This was formed during wartime to allow the women to take care of the men overseas and continues. I was fortunate enough to attend a meeting, learn about their projects (essay competitions, Girls State, dinners, etc.), and get an inside look to what they do. As a former Girls Stater, I can appreciate their hard work for the schools, young leaders, and the community as a whole. They hold meetings to discuss their next projects, such as sales of poppy flowers, bake sales (pictured above), and a steak lunch (also pictured above). Each year, they also have an Americanism Essay contest for grades 3-12 with monetary prizes. Nonetheless, the women work to raise money for good causes, such as the Fisher House and POW/MIA.
