Introduction to Project
“Military Memoirs and More” is a comprehensive project that encompasses interviews of retired and active servicemen and women, community service, projects that students can be a part of, and any information that would be of use to military individuals. (The interviews will not share personal information, to protect the privacy of the individuals spoken to, but will share what I have learned and can be read by other members of the military.) This allows individuals to read about experiences others have had and may even offer strength to one who may be struggling with battles of their own. Military individuals are by far the strongest people I have ever met in my life. To have the courage to endure war, sacrifice self in the name of America, and do so without expecting anything in return demonstrates a courage that words cannot describe.
The first part of the project is community service. This allows me to delve into what it takes to support the cause of the military and understand what goes behind the scenes to raise money, support the families, and thank the veterans. Sharing these experiences will hopefully encourage others to do the same, as this is the least we could do after all our military men and women have done for us.
The second part of the project is interviewing military individuals. Sharing this will allow others to see if their experiences are like someone else’s and can eliminate any sense of loneliness one may feel. It was wonderful for me to listen to what others had to say and see what all individuals in the military go through on a regular basis.
The third part of the project is sharing with other students what they can do to support the causes of the military. This includes Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen. These are essay competitions for the middle and high school students that allow them to learn about what the military does for them and demonstrate their knowledge in writing.
The fourth and final part of the project is when I research what the government does for the military and what benefits are available to them. This will serve as a resource for individuals who may be asking, “What next?”
